City Vitality Night lends an ear to the city's
Stiletto-pulse beating quickly across
light-lined streets
                            which loop and weave like veins
                            pumped with over-priced gasoline
                            and mocha lattes
I knew you'd understand Last night I had a vision, a revelation, if you will.
I thought, “Hey, I’ll do my homework and surprise Mr. DeVille!”

So I sharpened up my pencil just as sharp as it could be.
I took my time and tried real hard to write just perfectly.

And yes, it took me hours, but there’s not much I’d rather do...
You sure do give out lots of work, but I’d do it twice for you.

So I calculated theta, pi, and circumference, too.
I connected dots and colored skies... was tough, but I pushed through.

I summarized my science book and the culture of Kalamazoo,
and threw together a bonus theme on my favorite teacher: You!

I
A Morning Sonnet He is the waking morn that warms the clay
with shy smiles spinning softly off the grain.
He sends the blue birds chirping on her way,
dispelling swollen clouds and tempted rain.
His rays shine on her newly opened eyes.
Her tired grin returns as hymns are heard.
A sweet embrace warms even golden skies,
and soon all else becomes a swirling blur.
They dance through fields; their eyes fall into gaze,
but long hours bring short days and dusk grows near.
His hand, it slips like sand through hers and lays
upon her knees reflecting dim-lit tears.
     But days follow days, so night is not their curse
     For each new morn they meet s
Chasing sunsets The thin dirt road stretched across the field like a crusty old rubber band,
sunbaked and brittle.
It reached across the earth, and I stepped lightly along,
praying that it would not crumble into a thousand pieces beneath my step
and trap me in a cloud of dust, that in this heat I imagine
would be dryer than one hundred years squeezed from a grain of sand.

The summer sun bit at my lip and turned the corner around a bushel
of yellow brush rooted between the rocks just several feet ahead.
But it seemed no step taken brought me any closer than the previous
as if each step pulled the road right out of the ground
where it was free to br

Dear Santa, Hi! It’s Isabelle.
Hope your season’s full of cheer.
Mine’s been swell, and I’ve done well
to be real good this year!

I helped my mommy decorate
--- Santa, she nearly cried.
I baked her some treats, a tray full of sweets,
and brought buckets of snow right inside!

And when she said pick up your toys,
I pushed them 'neath my bed.
Though not quite done playing, my big heart was saying
make others feel happy instead.

And tonight I did the dishes,
My raisin hands you should have seen!
So I put that plate by the doggy gate
and Spot licked it up real clean.

So as you can see I’m doing my part
to spread some holiday cheer,
but for all that I churn, I ask less in return
on my humble list this year.

Just a sweet, warm cup of cocoa
and a simple hug will do
that’s all I need, I have no greed,
And here's even what I’ll do for YOU!

The workshop must be crowded
with the gifts you cannot give
to bad girls and boys--- those poor little toys!
They surely need somewhere to live!

Sooo...

If you have a rocking horse,
A princess crown, a scarf, of course,
A doll that walks, a doll that cries,
A doll that bakes me cherry pies,
A wishing well, a bubble show,
A net to catch a U.F.O.,
A dog, a cat, a duck that’s green,
A ball and bat, a time machine,
A homework elf, a candy store,
A shooting star, a spinning floor,
A reindeer and a pirate ship,
A choco-liscious chocolate chip,
Oh and I just 'bout forgot,
A bracelet like what mommy's got....

It really wouldn’t bother me
to find these gifts beneath my tree.

I’m hoping Christmas finds you well,

Aww, that's so sweet! It sounds like something my baby sister would put together, if she could read or write that well. :) I can't pick a favorite part or line--I love the sweet silliness of the list, the cute (and mischievous) tone of the opening stanzas, the innocent ending... it's nice throughout!

Ugly Cat Pillow  Once upon a time there was an ugly cat pillow. It had terrible mismatched button eyes that made passersby do a double take. Its tail was stuffed with the lumpiest cotton you ever did see, while its side was patched up from the time someone slid their chair legs over it. Ugly Cat Pillow was just dusting, when SCREEEEECH!! Under the light, under the needle… guts, threads, and frays—the moment of truth. Ugly Cat Pillow liked to think of itself a hero of the hardwood floors; and bearing with him forever, the great patch of courage.

Anyway, those were the old days when Ugly Cat Pillow was much more politically active. You should have Ugly Cat Pillow by ~sweetcapris
Lord of the Worms I dug in the morning with the dew still free
I dug in the yard, right behind the old oak tree
I sprang from my bed to go dig up worms
I tossed ‘em in the bucket where they like to squirm

Dig then, wherever you may be

I will lead you all in a fishing jubilee

I hopped on my shovel for the slugs and ants
I asked them for their help, but they didn’t take the chance

Jam Jamboree In Jacksonton Heights is the jam jamboree
Where contestants all test out their skills
In succulent jellies and jams packed in jars
Wrapped with polka dot ribbons and frills

And then with a snap, off pops the cap
An aroma then sweeps through the town
Down Main Street or Elm Street or Washington Drive
The sweet scent of jam can be found

Betsy’s blueberry jam is the best
Or maybe Miss Sue’s marmalade
And Patty’s pineapple preserves make me swoon
It’s just too close to choose I’m afraid

There’s cups for the taste testing, pass them around
And tents toasting buttery bread
And donuts for filling, for tJam Jamboree by ~sweetcapris
Monster Tales My brother took the flashlight
And cast shadows on his grin
And told me such a scary tale
I shook inside my skin.

A monster lives beneath my bed
Who in the night is creeping,
And likes to nibble on my toes,
If he sees that I am sleeping.

I think about his pointed ears
That twitch when I start dreaming,
And whose big bright yellow eyes
Would quickly have me screaming.

I think about his ragged tail
That twists around his claws,
And the rows and rows teeth
That line his clenching jaws.

All night he licks his lips until
The time has come to rise,
And he can munch his favorite feast
When I have closed my eyes.

The Best Tree in the Land Once when I was younger,
I found a little tree
barely bigger than a twig; it was
‘bout half as big as me.

It stood there in a field of snow
a-shiverin’ in the wind,
so I slipped my mittens on his arms
to make him warm again.

Then I brought a blanket
and we both sat underneath.
Above us lay the winter sky
and tender earth beneath.

Then soft and silent baby stars
drifted all around
and twinkled like new-fallen snow
beside us on the ground.

In this moment of winter magic
I took his twig in hand,
and on that Christmas day I had
the best tree in the land.

Well, up we both grew big and strong,
